How Much Does a Landmine Actually Weigh?!

Writer's picture: David OteyDavid Otey

One of the most frequent questions about Landmine Training, how much does it ACTUALLY weigh?

Sure, the Olympic barbell should be 45lbs of weight but when you consider where you are holding the weight and the angle you may be working at, that weight has to change.

If you are beginning to lift or have never used the Landmine before this is a pretty important question.

So, to display how much it can actually change, I measured it.

To display this, I used a Gungnir Barbell and Sorinex Landmine.

At the bottom position (parallel to ground) it was 24.72 lbs or about 25lbs. When you are adding weights and connecting to their existing lifts, make sure to use the rough number of 25lbs as the baseline before adding weights.

At Shoulder height for myself (5’10”) that was roughly a 35-degree angle of the bar in relation to the ground. The weight slightly dropped to 22.3lbs. This was only a subtle difference in weight and would be barely recognizable in most lifts.

At the fully extended position of a shoulder press, roughly a 70-degree angle, the bar weight dropped down to 14.63lbs!

Almost a 10lb drop from the initial weight.

Additionally, at the top position, lateral movement should be considered as the downward weight is beginning to decrease and the bar has the ability to pivot in many other directions.

What should you take away?

✅ Start off with a baseline of 25lb for clients looking to lift with the landmine.

✅ Take into consideration the weight of the lift when testing their strength.

✅ The lower the lift to the ground, the more challenging it will be.
